Vanity Mirror Height and Lighting in an Indian Bathroom

A vanity mirror is one of the few pieces in a house that is used at close range every single day, which is why small errors in height and lighting are so noticeable.

Height above the basin

Leave roughly 15 to 25 cm between the top of the basin or counter and the bottom edge of the mirror. Less and splashes reach the frame and the backing; more and the mirror starts to float away from the basin it belongs to. The centre of the glass wants to be around 150 cm from the floor for most households, adjusted for the people actually using it.

Width relative to the basin

A vanity mirror generally looks settled at the width of the basin or slightly narrower. Wider than the counter reads as a wall mirror that happens to be above a basin. Where two people share a long counter, two mirrors usually work better than one very wide one.

Light beside, not above

A single downlight above a mirror casts shadows into the eyes and under the chin, which is the least useful light for shaving or for anything done at close range. Light placed either side of the mirror, at roughly eye height, lights the face evenly. If a fitting above is the only option, a wide diffused fitting is far better than a narrow spot.

Colour temperature

Around 3000K to 4000K suits a bathroom: warm enough to be comfortable, neutral enough that skin tones look as they will outside. Very cool white light exaggerates every mark on the face and makes the room feel clinical.

Humidity is the real enemy

  • Run the exhaust fan during and after a shower, not just during.
  • Wipe standing water off the bottom edge of the glass rather than letting it sit.
  • Keep the gap behind a framed mirror ventilated where the fixing allows it.
  • Prefer stainless or plated fixings; plain steel will rust and streak.

The black creeping edge that appears on old bathroom mirrors is moisture reaching the silvering from the perimeter. Once it starts it cannot be reversed, so the ventilation habits above are worth more than any particular product claim.

What our listings state

Framed and glass dimensions, glass thickness, weight, fixings supplied, and whether the maker rates the mirror for damp areas. Where a damp-area rating is not published, we do not assume one on the maker’s behalf.
